Shem Own

A dedicated dog trainer with years of hands-on experience in obedience, behaviour, and working dog training. Having started training dogs from the age of 12, he has developed a strong passion for helping both dogs and their owners succeed. Trained under the guidance of National IGP Champion Lewis Hartley and alongside some of the UK’s top protection dog trainers, Shem brings a practical, structured approach to training and is recognised as an upcoming superstar in dog sport.

Meet Shem

My journey in dog training started when I was 12 years old after getting my first German Shepherd. From that point on, I developed a real passion for working with dogs and committed myself to learning and mastering different training techniques. Along the way, I’ve had the opportunity to train under the guidance of National IGP Champion Lewis Hartley and work alongside some of the top protection dog trainers in the UK, which has played a big role in shaping my approach to training.

One of my main interests the demanding protection dog sport IGP. I’ve trained working-line dogs from puppyhood in this sport, developing them through the different stages of training and competition, which reflects the dedication and structure I bring to my work.

Through my involvement in dog sport, I’ve had the opportunity to travel across Europe, training in countries such as Germany, the Netherlands, and Slovenia. This has allowed me to gain valuable international experience and learn from a variety of training styles and approaches.

Alongside sport training, I also focus heavily on pet obedience and helping everyday dog owners. I’ve worked with many people to rehabilitate their dogs, improving behaviour and strengthening the relationship between dog and owner, in many cases helping families keep their dogs when they were close to giving them up. I’ve also worked with professional working dogs for police roles, preparing and developing dogs that meet the standards required for law-enforcement duties.

Training Techniques

My training focuses on clear, structured teaching that helps dogs understand what is expected of them, no matter their starting point. I work with everything from puppies that need strong foundations and good habits, to dogs that may be on their last chances due to behavioural issues. Using reward-based methods, motivation, and consistent communication, my goal is to build trust, develop reliable behaviours, and help both the dog and owner move forward with confidence.

More About Shem

German Shepherds.

German Shepherd, Doberman, Boxer, Springer Spaniel, Rottweiler.

Building up puppies from the start and helping owners see what their dogs are capable of with the right training. It’s really rewarding to guide people through the process and help them develop confidence in their dog and in themselves. Seeing owners regain faith that training can make a real difference, and watching their dogs grow into well-behaved, happy companions, is the best part of the job for me.

Rescue dogs, Doberman, Rottweiler, Shepherds, Spaniels, Dachshunds.

The recall. It’s one of the most important behaviours a dog can learn and forms the foundation of reliable control and trust between dog and handler.
